Public Notice: Water supply interruption affecting parts of the City of Mhlathuze due to power failure

Wednesday, 8 July 2026

uMngeni-uThukela Water wishes to advise residents and affected stakeholders that the Nsezi Pump Station is without electricity supply due to a power outage.

Preliminary information indicates that the outage was caused by agricultural activities in the area. During sugarcane burning, a power pole carrying electricity to the pump station was damaged, resulting in the interruption of power supply.

To maintain operations, uMngeni-uThukela Water activated a standby generator. Unfortunately, the generator suffered a mechanical failure early this morning, affecting the abstraction of raw water from the weir.

The affected customers, including Tronox and the Esikhaleni Water Treatment Plant (City of uMhlathuze), have been informed of the situation. In the interim, the Nsezi Water Treatment Plant is abstracting raw water from the lake to mitigate the impact on water supply.

At this stage, there is no estimated time for the restoration of electricity supply and the full resumption of normal operations. Technical teams and the relevant service providers are attending to the matter, and further updates will be communicated as soon as additional information becomes available.

uMngeni-uThukela Water apologises for the inconvenience caused and appreciates the patience and understanding of all affected customers and communities.
